EDITORIAL · CABIN TIERS

Y, W, J, F — what each cabin gets you.

A short reference to cabin classes and when each upgrade pays off.

Y

Economy

The standard cabin. 28–32 inch pitch, full snack and beverage service, fare buckets from H down through T and X.

When the flight is 3 hours or less, basic economy is rarely worth upgrading.
W

Premium Economy

Dedicated cabin with 38–42 inch pitch, wider seat, separate meal service, priority boarding, two free bags on most carriers.

Strong value on flights of 8 hours or more, especially overnight.
J

Business

Lie-flat seat on long-haul, free lounge access, premium meals, priority everything. Typically 3–6× economy.

If you need to work the next morning, the lie-flat is the product you are buying.
F

First

Suite-style seats with closing doors, dedicated cabin crew, multi-course service, chauffeur in some markets.

Almost always cheaper using miles than cash. Out-of-pocket First is a status purchase.
